This literacy bag extends the wonderful story THE OLD WOMAN WHO
NAMED THINGS by Cynthia Rylant. Inside the hand-painted bag, you will
find seven activities to extend the story. All pieces have been printed on
card stock, laminated, cut out and are ready to use.
1. Proper Noun and Common Noun Matching: Match each of the common
noun items to the proper noun name that the old lady named them.
2. Sentence Rewrite: Proper nouns name a noun and must always be
capitalized. Rewrite the sentences below with correct capitalization and
ending punctuation.
3. Story Comprehension Check: After reading the story The Old Woman
Who Named Things, answer the following questions. If the answer is true,
circle the picture of the old lady. If the answer is false, circle the picture
of the dog.
4. Person, Place or Thing: A noun is a person, place or thing. Look at
the picture cards. Decide if each is a person, place or thing and place it in
the correct column on the mat.
5. Why Lucky? Writing Activity: Why did the woman name the dog
"Lucky"? If you could name the dog, what name would you choose?
6. Compound Words: A compound word is a word made up of two
shorter words put together. Draw a line from the word on the left to the
word on the right, that when put together will create a new compound
word. All the compound words are found in the story The Old Woman
Who Named Things.
7. Story Retell: Retell the story of The Old Woman Who Named Things
using the story retelling picture cutouts.
