THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT
This teacher created literacy bag is based on the rhyming book THE HOUSE THAT
JACK BUILT.  It is packed with TEN FUN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES from the areas of
reading, language and math.   I strive to make activities that are not only fun but
reinforce skills being taught in class.  As always, activities are in full color, printed on
cardstock, laminated in thick 3 mil. laminating film and cut out for you.

1. LARGE HAND-PAINTED CANVAS BAG

2.  No Place Like Home (Place Value):
Roll the dice.  Write the number on the small red die (the inside die) in the tens
place.  Write the number on the clear die (the large one) in the ones place.  Repeat
these steps until you have filled in each of the six houses.  When you have finished,
put the houses in order from the smallest number to the largest number.

3.  Story order:
Use the picture cut outs to retell the story of The House that Jack Built.

4.  Draw-a-Rhyme Jack:
Finish each line with a word that rhymes and makes sense.  After you have finished
deciding on the rhyming word, draw it.

5.  Build A House:
Put the picture cards showing how a house in built in the correct order.  Write a
sentence to describe each picture.

6.  ow or ou sort:
Sort out the word cards according to whether they have /ou/ as in the word house or
/ow/ as in the word cow.

7.  When did it Happen?
Use the calendar to answer the questions about events from the story.

8.  Vocabulary Three Way Match:
Match together the vocabulary word and it's definition.  Then match those with the
picture that best illustrates the word.

9.  Honey in the House:
How might the story be different if Jack left a pot of honey in the house instead of a
bag of malt?  To begin your own tale, think about what critter would want the honey,
then what would try to get that animal, and so on.  Have fun and be creative.

10.  Counting Cards:
Count the objects on each card and put them in number order from least to greatest.
Or, you can use the cards to create addition or subtraction problems by choosing two
cards , counting the objects and using those numbers to add or subtract.

11.  Rhymes with Horn:
Pull the letter strip through the horn to make words from the -orn family.

12.  Activity Letter:
Describes how to do each activity
