Friendship
Community in the Classroom
FRIENDSHIP & KINDNESS!  This adorable bag is full of wonderful activities stressing
the importance of kindness and friendship in the classroom.  What a fun way to work
on classroom community building skills at the beginning of the year!  The
hand-painted bag includes an adorable bear and moose (looks much like a DJ Inkers
style).  Inside you will find TEN great activities and a set of teacher designed "Giraffe
Hero" awards.  Activities are printed on cardstock, laminated in 3mil  thick laminating
film, cut out and ready to go.  (Manipulatives are included.)

INCLUDED in the hand-painted bag:

1. Kind or Unkind Board Game: Roll the die and then pick a card.  Decide if the action
stated on the game cards is kind or unkind. If its kind, then  move forward the number
of spaces rolled. If its unkind, move backwards that number of spaces.  Follow any
directions written on the square you land on.

2. Venn Diagram: Compare how you and a friend are alike and different by completing
the Venn diagram.

3. Have a Heart BINGO game: Play BINGO using the positive words.  You can also just
match the calling cards to the matching word on the BINGO card.

4. "Building Community Through Compliments" Journal: Write a compliment on each
person's page in the journal.  (includes journal cover and reproducible student page)

5. Friendship Bracelets: String the beads to create a colorful friendship bracelet to
give to a friend.  You may want to create a pattern using the beads.

6. Words: The Power to Hurt or Heal: Follow the directions on the Words: The Power
to Hurt or Heal page to demonstrate how hurtful comments can leave a lasting
impression on a person and how kind words can help to heal.  Upon completing this
activity, students will answer a couple questions about what they learned.  A VERY
powerful activity! Quick Summary: Students cut out a paper person, tear it into 4 large
pieces and a write a put-down or unkind comment on each piece.  They then turn each
piece over and write a positive comment or compliment and tape the person back
together (like a puzzle).  The students can see that the person still doesn't look like it
did before the hurtful comments--they they left "scars" or lasting impressions on
him/her.  Therefore, it is important to always think before speaking unkindly as our
words have the power to hurt or to heal.

7. Chain of Friendship: Decorate a paper person cutout to look like yourself.  (You can
trace the person from the When you have finished, have your teacher attach it to the
other cutouts already finished.  It will create a Chain of Friendship.

8. Helping Friendship Blossom: Fill in your name at the center of the flower.  Then, on
each of the five petals write what you do to that makes you a good friend.

9. Friendship Poetry Pieces: Arrange the cutout words to create two short friendship
poems. Each poem is printed in a different color. The blue one consist of eight words
and the red consists of 14 words. The completed poems are printed out in the
matching color to use as an answer key.

10. Our School Family Poem: Fill in each blank with a rhyming word that will make
sense in each sentence of the poem.

11.  Set of Giraffe Hero award certificates  to reward students for doing acts of
kindness and friendship in the classroom.  "For sticking your neck out and making the
classroom a better place for others, you_______________ are recognized  as a Giraffe
Hero!"

12.  Activity letter: Explaining how to do each activity
