CELEBRATE THE WORK OF SYD HOFF is part of my new author study
series. This cd-rom contains 27 teacher-created activities to explore the
work of Syd Hoff and three of his popular books: Danny and the Dinosaur,
Danny and the Dinosaur Go To Camp, and Sammy the Seal. All activities are
in PDF format so they be opened using Acrobat Reader on both PCs and
Macs. A link to pictures of some (but not all) of the activities is below.
Activities included on cd-rom:
1. Getting to Know the Author: Syd Hoff biographical information
2. Activities for Danny and the Dinosaur
1. Story Discussion Questions: Answer the questions about the story
Danny and the Dinosaur.
2. Creative writing activity--If you were in the museum with Danny, which
displays would you be sure to visit? Why? Draw a picture to go with your
answer.
3. Number Word/ Number Matching--Match the numbers to their number
word (on dinosaur themed cards) (can be done for number 10-100 counting
by 10's or 1-10.
4. Dino Safari-- Use the descriptions to find different types of dinosaurs
(using the dinosaur cutouts)
5. Dino-sort--Use the blank Venn diagram and dinosaur cutouts. Write
attributes in each circle of the Venn diagram using a wipe off marker. Sort
the dinosaurs onto the Venn diagram using the attributes you selected.
6. Brontosaurus Blends—Circle the consonant blend you hear at the
beginning of the name of each picture shown on the brontosaurus.
7. Prehistoric Time--Fill in the time shown on each clock (hour and half hour)
8. Dino-Days--Fill in the boxes with the days of the week in the correct
order. Then, follow the directions given using the little colored dinosaurs.
9. ABC Order--Put the cards with the dinosaur names in alphabetical order.
10. Dino Addition--Match the dinosaur egg with the addition problem to the
correct dinosaur sum on the mat.
11. Dinosaur BINGO--Play a dinosaur bingo game
12. Dinosaur Vowels--Fill in the missing vowel to complete each word so
that it makes sense in the sentence.
Activities for Danny and the Dinosaur Go Camping:
1. Noun or Verb Sort: Sort out the cards according to whether the word is
a noun or a verb.
2. Camp Out Contractions: Match together the word cards with their correct
contractions.
3. -amp Words: Slide the strip through to make new -amp words. Pick four
of the new words and use them in sentences.
4. Make an -ent word: See how many words you can create that have the
=ent ending.
5. Danny and the Dinosaur's Day at Camp: Danny and the Dinosaur had a
busy day at camp. Put the events of their day in order by numbering them
using ordinal numbers (ie: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)
6. Which Way? Fill in the blanks with directional words (north, south,
east, west, northwest, southeast, etc) to complete the sentences about the
map.
7. Compound Word Camp: Match together the picture with the two words
that create its name.
8. Shape Match: Match together the cards with the name of the shape, the
picture of that shape and an object from camp that has that shape.
Activities for Sammy the Seal:
1. The Animals at the Zoo: Fill in the missing vowel in the name of each
zoo animal from the story.
2. Cool Zoo: Add the /oo/ to each word. Read the new word and then
match it with it's picture.
3. Harp Seal and Weddell Seal Venn Diagram: After reading the
information pages about the Harp seal (from the Artic) and the Weddell seal
(from the Antartic), use the Venn diagram to show how the two types of
seals are alike and different.
4. Sammy the Seal Subtraction: Place the ball with the correct answer to
each subtraction problem on the seal's nose.
5. Tourist Information: If Sammy asked you what one thing he should see
while he was out of the zoo, what would you tell him? Write a sentence
giving your reply and draw a picture of Sammy visiting that place.
6. Seal Glyph: Follow the directions to make your own unique seal glyph.
7. Where in the Zoo: Where in the zoo?: Follow the directions on the
Where in the Zoo? page to put the animals in their correct cages. Use the
cage page and the animal cards.
