| CELEBRATE THE WORK OF KEVIN HENKES is part of my new author study series. This cd-roms contains 26 teacher-created activities to explore the world of Kevin Henkes and two of his popular books: Chrysanthemum and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. All activities are in PDF format so they be opened using Acrobat Reader on both PCs and Macs. Activities included on the cd-rom: ALL ABOUT THE AUTHOR: KEVIN HENKES KEVIN HENKES STORY TITLE MEMORY MATCH GAME PRETEND YOU’RE THE AUTHOR CREATIVE WRITING NINE ACTIVITIES FOR “CHRYSANTHEMUM” 1. Calendar activity--Use the calendar to answer to answer questions about the days and dates. 2. Mouse Glyph--Follow the directions to make their own unique mouse glyph about school. 3. Roll Call--Put the cards with the names of the students in Chrysanthemum's class in ABC order. 4. Roll Call Count--Count the letters in each classmate's name, record the findings with tally marks and then use the information to answer the comparison questions about the data. 5. Story Element Flower--Fill in the blanks on the flower petals to answer the questions about the story elements. 6. Story Sequence Completion--Answer the question what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. 7. Number Comparison--Compare the two numbers (one on each of Chrysanthemum's ear) using <, >, or = and write the correct symbol on her head. 8. Tell Me About My Name—Interview a parent/guardian to learn about you got your name. 9. Creative Writing- If you could name yourself any other name, what would it be and why would you choose it. ELEVEN ACTIVITIES FOR “LILLY’S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE” 1. Purple Purse Context Clues and Definitions: Read each story related sentence on the dark purple purse focusing on the meaning of the underlined word. Then match that sentence card with the light purple purse card that has the meaning that best describes the underlined word. 2. Lilly's Synonym BINGO game: When the caller calls a word/phrase, find the synonym on the BINGO . This can also play this alone by matching the cards to the correct synonym square. 3. In the Classroom Sequencing: Put in chronological order seven events the happened in Lilly's classroom the day she brought in her purple plastic purse. 4. Money Match: Match together the cards featuring the front sides of coins, the back sides of coins and a short coin poem that helps student remember how much each coin is worth. 5. Cause and Effect Puzzles: Match the two puzzle pieces together that make up a cause and effect pair. 6. Adjective/Noun/Picture Matching: Draw a line from the adjective to the noun it describes and then to the correct picture. 7. Lilly Bubble Thinking Map: Complete the bubble map describing what type of person Lilly is. 8. Mr. Slinger Bubble Thinking Map: Complete the bubble map describing Mr. Slinger. (For more of a challenge, use what you learned about Mr. Slinger from the story description to draw conclusions about what type of teacher he is.) 9. Creative Writing: Write about another way Lilly could have handled her anger towards Mr. Slinger instead of drawing a mean picture of him. 10. Coin Counting: A.) Match the card pairs that feature the same coin configuration. B.) Count the amount on the coin cards and match them to their correct amount C.) Match the amount cards. D.) Use play coins to count out ways to equal the amount on each card. 11. Character Comparison: Use the Venn Diagram to compare Lilly to another character from one of Kevin Henkes books (ie: Wendell, Chrysanthemum) or compare her to yourself.
